REVIEW: The Martyr's Oath by Johnnie Moore

About the Book

Be Inspired by Amazing Eyewitness Stories of Hope and Courage from the Persecuted Church

We are witnessing an astonishing escalation in Christian persecution like we have rarely seen since the first century. Some estimate that every five minutes, a Christian is martyred for his or her faith. Countries like Egypt have experienced more Christian persecution in the last five years than in the previous six hundred years combined. And who could have missed the atrocities of ISIS in Syria, Boko Haram in Nigeria, and the continued persecution of Christians in North Korea?

Johnnie Moore, like many American Christians, didn't fully appreciate the extent of what was going on--until he witnessed the graduation of theology students in India. Unlike graduation ceremonies in America--where feel-good speeches made by visiting celebrities are common--this one featured a remarkable oath. It wasn't an oath to excel or succeed. It was an oath to be willing to die, if necessary, for the cause of Christ. This was no empty promise. This was a choice, choosing the eternal over the temporal.

Johnnie knew he was witnessing a raw, first-century Christianity that his comfortable American version had shielded him from. "For the first time, I really understand my faith," says Johnnie Moore. Now, he's on a mission to give this same experience to others. He and his team have crisscrossed the world, recorders in hand, gathering eyewitness accounts from dozens of people who survived persecution--and the stories of some who didn't.

Join Johnnie Moore on this compelling journey to the heart of the Christian faith.

My Review

The Martyr's Oath by Johnnie Moore is a collection of stories of people who have died for their faith. A concept for so many in the West we can't even wrap our heads around. But in the last several years the persecution of Believers around the world has escelated to a high we have not seen in generations. Men, women, and yes even children in nations like Egypt, Iraq, Iran, China, North Korea. Nations where being a Christian is either severaly frowned upon or illegal. The Martyr's Oath is a timely work that needs to be read by Believers and non-believers alike.

REVIEW: The Delusion by Laura Gallier

About the Book

By March of Owen Edmonds's senior year, eleven students at Masonville High School have committed suicide. Amid the media frenzy and chaos, Owen tries to remain levelheaded--until he endures his own near-death experience and wakes to a distressing new reality.

The people around him suddenly appear to be shackled and enslaved.

Owen frantically seeks a cure for what he thinks are crazed hallucinations, but his delusions become even more sinister. An army of hideous, towering beings, unseen by anyone but Owen, are preying on his girlfriend and classmates, provoking them to self-destruction.

Owen eventually arrives at a mind-bending conclusion: he's not imagining the evil--everyone else is blind to its reality. He must warn and rescue those he loves . . . but this proves to be no simple mission. Will he be able to convince anyone to believe him before it's too late?

Owen's heart-pounding journey through truth and delusion will force him to reconsider everything he believes. He both longs for and fears the answers to questions that are quickly becoming too dangerous to ignore.

My Review

The Delusion by Laura Gallier is a Young Adult Supernatural Thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and awake at night because you won't want to go to sleep until you finish the whole thing. Laura Gallier's The Delusion is reminiscent of Frank Peretti and Craig Parshall's Supernatural Thrillers and I believe Laura has made a place for herself in this genre and I can't wait to see what Laura will release next.

The Last Girl by Nadia Murad

About the Book

In this intimate memoir of survival, a former captive of the Islamic State tells her harrowing and ultimately inspiring story.

Nadia Murad was born and raised in Kocho, a small village of farmers and shepherds in northern Iraq. A member of the Yazidi community, she and her brothers and sisters lived a quiet life. Nadia had dreams of becoming a history teacher or opening her own beauty salon.

On August 15th, 2014, when Nadia was just twenty-one years old, this life ended. Islamic State militants massacred the people of her village, executing men who refused to convert to Islam and women too old to become sex slaves. Six of Nadia's brothers were killed, and her mother soon after, their bodies swept into mass graves. Nadia was taken to Mosul and forced, along with thousands of other Yazidi girls, into the ISIS slave trade.

Nadia would be held captive by several militants and repeatedly raped and beaten. Finally, she managed a narrow escape through the streets of Mosul, finding shelter in the home of a Sunni Muslim family whose eldest son risked his life to smuggle her to safety.

Today, Nadia's story--as a witness to the Islamic State's brutality, a survivor of rape, a refugee, a Yazidi--has forced the world to pay attention to the ongoing genocide in Iraq. It is a call to action, a testament to the human will to survive, and a love letter to a lost country, a fragile community, and a family torn apart by war.

My Review

The Last Girl is the captivating and heartbreaking story of Nadia Murad. Nadia was born in a village to a Kurdish family in the Middle East. As she grew older ISIS began taking over villages and towns one by one. Eventually ISIS made it into Nadia's village. ISIS destroyed everything in sight and slaughtered most of the residents including Nadia's mother and 6 brothers. And Nadia- ISIS took her into captivity as an ISIS sex slave. Nadia eventually escaped her evil captors and has become a voice against the Islamic State. Even speaking to the UN. Nadia's story is an important one and this book should be read by everybody.

REVIEW: The Crooked Path by Irma Joubert

About the Book

As retired physician Lettie Louw looks back upon her life, she recounts her coming of age in WWII-era South Africa in this compelling story of delayed love, loss, and reconciliation.

34460579Lettie Louw is the daughter of the town physician in their South African village. She spends her childhood in the warm African days playing with her friends and being adored by her doting parents. When she becomes a teenager, she experiences her first taste of unrequited romantic love in the form of her best friend’s older brother, De Wet Fourie. When De Wet pursues the beautiful and wealthy Annabelle, Lettie’s dreams are crushed, and she moves to Johannesburg to pursue her studies in medicine.

Life in Johannesburg feels strange to Lettie, and the world around her is in profound upheaval as the Second World War rages. Her feelings for De Wet never waver, and Lettie is heartbroken when he marries another of her childhood friends. Lettie soon meets Marco Romanelli, an Italian immigrant, and they marry and raise two daughters, as the racial and political tensions in South Africa swirl about them.

Lettie never forgets her first love, even as the ravages of time, war, and illness play upon her life and the lives of those she loves. In their later years, Lettie and De Wet are thrown into one another’s company again, and they are given another chance at a life together.

My Review

The Crooked Path is yet another beautiful but haunting work of art from South African author Irma Joubert. The Crooked Path begins with an older and retired Lettie who begins to look back at her life and recount her younger years in WWII South Africa. Her first encounter with her first love De Wet who eventually marries one of Lettie's childhood friends and Lettie who meets a young Italian immigrant whom she marries and has a family with. Then years later Lettie and De Wet meet again and reconnect. The Crooked Path is a story about love, loss, faith, and second chances. This is a story, as all of Irma's works, that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Irma Joubert skillfully and masterfully is able to create characters that leap off the page and into the reader's heart. This is a must read!

REVIEW: Across the Blue by Carrie Turansky

My Review

Across the Blue is a an Edwardian piece about the first planes and romance. I always enjoy historical novels when you can tell while reading them that the author spent a lot of time researching so everything would be correct. You have no idea how many so called historical novels I've read that feel and read nothing like the period it's supposed to be set in. So I appreciate that Carrie took the time to do her research. I also really loved reading about the first planes. Across the Blue is a sweeping adventure and you're not going to want to miss the ride.

REVIEW: They Came for Freedomby Jay Milbrandt

About the Book

A page-turning story of the Pilgrims, the courageous band of freedom-seekers who set out for a new life for themselves and forever changed the course of history.

Once a year at Thanksgiving, we encounter Pilgrims as folksy people in funny hats before promptly forgetting them. In the centuries since America began, the Pilgrims have been relegated to folklore and children’s stories, fairy-tale mascots for holiday parties and greeting cards.

The true story of the Pilgrim Fathers could not be more different. Beginning with the execution of two pastors deviating from the Elizabethan Church of England, the Pilgrims’ great journey was one of courageous faith, daring escape, and tenuous survival. Theirs is the story of refugees who fled intense religious persecution; of dreamers who voyaged the Atlantic and into the unknown when all other attempts had led to near-certain death; of survivors who struggled with newfound freedom. Loneliness led to starvation, tension gave way to war with natives, and suspicion broke the back of the very freedom they endeavored to achieve.

Despite the pain and turmoil of this high stakes triumph, the Pilgrim Fathers built the cornerstone for a nation dedicated to faith, freedom, and thankfulness. This is the epic story of the Pilgrims, an adventure that laid the bedrock for the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, and the American identity.

My Review

I've been looking forward to reading Jay Milbrandt's They Came for Freedom since I found out about it months ago. I've always enjoyed historical non-fiction and especially pieces about the colonial pilgrims. Some of these pilgrims who came here from England for mostly religious freedom are my own ancestors. The true and real story about these men, women and children is remarkable. And they were only successful with the help of God. A great documentary on these early settlers is Monumental: In Search of America's National Treasure. It is fantastic and one of the historians featured in the documentary is so passionate about what she is talking about that she brings the pilgrims story to life. Jay has done the same with the written word. They Came for Freedom is a must read in the Non-Fiction genre.

My Review

Coloring Christmas Devotions is a nice little Christmas themed coloring book. The book was quite smaller than I was expecting it to be, but that's not really a big deal. I was just a little suprised. The devotions for each coloring page are not deep devotions. They are just quite simple and of course Christmas themed. Each coloring page consists of a Chrismas themed picture to color in. Now I will say these pictures can be difficult to color in. The areas you are supposed to color in are kind of small and thin. So if you are a perfectionist when you color than these pictures are going to take you a while to finish. Overall this is a good coloring book for Christmastime.

REVIEW: Taking Aim by Eva Shockey

About the Book

An acclaimed bow hunter who defies the stereotype that hunting is a man’s game, Eva Shockey is a TV and social media phenomenon at the forefront of a new wave of women and girls who are passionate about outdoor sports.

Eva Shockey grew up expecting to be a dancer like her glamorous mother. But something about spending family vacations RV-ing across North America and going on hunts with her dad sparked in her an enduring passion for a different way of life.
In Taking Aim, Eva tells a very personal story of choosing the less-traveled path to a rewarding life in outdoor pursuits like hunting and fishing. For her, as her millions of fans can attest, that has meant hunting as a way of harvesting food, caring deeply about conservation, sustainability and healthy eating, and getting closer to God in nature.
In this riveting memoir for the adventurer in all of us, Eva takes readers along as she hunts caribou on the rugged Aleutian Islands, tracks a 1,500-pound bull moose across the unforgiving Yukon, and meets many other challenges of a life in the wild.
Along the way we learn that hunting is about so much more than pulling a trigger. "My story is about discovering your dream," writes Eva. "It's about following your passion, mastering your skills, taking aim no matter who thinks you’re crazy…and then letting the arrow fly. If you’ve done all you can, I can tell you that you’re almost certain to hit your mark."
Whether you’re a lifelong hunter or a city dweller who has never set foot in the wilderness, Eva’s story delivers an empowering message about rejecting stereotypes and expectations, believing in yourself, and finding the courage to pursue what you care about most.

My Review

Like so many out there I am quite familiar with the Shockey family. My dad has watched Eva's father's show on the Outdoor Channel for years. Her and her father's adventures in outdoors hunting in places like Canada and exotic places around world like Africa. Eva Shockey seems to be finding her own in the world of outdoor sports including creating her own brand. Taking Aim is all about being a woman in a normally male dominated area and holding your own. It's about encouraging young women to join. It's about being different and being yourself. It's about living a healthier and fulfilling life. It's about growing your faith in God while being in nature. This is a book I very much enjoyed and will be keeping in my personal library.

REVIEW: To Wager Her Heart by Tamera Alexander

About the Book

With fates bound by a shared tragedy, a reformed gambler from the Colorado Territory and a Southern Belle bent on breaking free from society's expectations must work together to achieve their dreams—provided that the truth doesn't tear them apart first.

Sylas Rutledge, the new owner of the Northeast Line Railroad, invests everything he has into this venture, partly for the sake of the challenge. But mostly to clear his father's name. One man holds the key to Sy's success—General William Giles Harding of Nashville's Belle Meade Plantation. But Harding is champagne and thoroughbreds, and Sy Rutledge is beer and bullocks. Sy needs someone to help him maneuver his way through Nashville's society, and when he meets Alexandra Jamison, he quickly decides he's found his tutor. Only, he soon discovers that the very train accident his father is blamed for causing is what killed Alexandra Jamison's fiancee—and what has broken her heart.

Spurning an arranged marriage by her father, Alexandra instead pursues her passion for teaching at Fisk University, the first freedmen's university in the United States. But family—and Nashville society—do not approve, and she soon finds herself cast out from both. Through connections with the Harding family, Alexandra and Sy become unlikely allies. And despite her first impressions, Alexandra gradually finds herself coming to respect, and even care for this man. But how can she, when her heart is still spoken for? And when Sy's roguish qualities and adventuresome spirit smack more of recklessness than responsibility and honor?

Sylas Rutledge will risk everything to win over the woman he loves. What he doesn't count on is having to wager her heart to do it.

Set against the real history of Nashville's Belle Meade Plantation and the original Fisk University Jubilee Singers ensemble, To Wager Her Heart is a stirring love story about seeking justice and restoring honor at a time in history when both were tenuous and hard-won.

My Review

To Wager Her Heart is Tamera Alexander's third installment in her Belle Meade Plantation series. Which I did not know when I requested this book. An OOPS on my part. But it really read like a standalone novel so I think it would be fine to read To Wager Her Heart if you haven't read the previous two installments. And it's a Southern Romance...you really can't go wrong with this.

To Wager Her Heart was a sweet tale of a Southern Belle wanting to break free of societies expectations and a a reformed gambler. Alexandra, a teacher at Fisk University, the first Freedman's school in the United States. Sy, the new owner of the Northeast Line Railroad. Both struggle for justice. Alexandra also to let go and move on. Sy, to win the heart of the woman he loves.

REVIEW: Many Sparrows by Lori Benton

When settler Clare Inglesby is widowed on a mountain crossing and her young son, Jacob, captured by Shawnees, she'll do everything in her power to get him back, including cross the Ohio River and march straight into the presence of her enemies deep in Indian country. Frontiersman and adopted Shawnee, Jeremiah Ring, promises to guide Clare through the wilderness and help her recover Jacob.
Once they reach the Shawnees and discover Jeremiah's own Shawnee sister, Rain Crow, has taken

My Review

Set in the West in the 1800's, Many Sparrows tells the story of Clare Inglesby, a widow and a mother. Her son however has been captured by the Shawnee tribe and Clare will do whatever she must to retrieve her son Jacob. She sets on her journey with Jeremiah, a frontiersman and adoptive Shawnee. REVIEW: Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine

About the Book

In an exhilarating new series, New York Times bestselling author Rachel Caine rewrites history, creating a dangerous world where the Great Library of Alexandria has survived the test of time.…

Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly—but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden.

Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family, who are involved in the thriving black market. Jess has been sent to be his family’s spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library’s service.
When his friend inadvertently commits heresy by creating a device that could change the world, Jess discovers that those who control the Great Library believe that knowledge is more valuable than any human life—and soon both heretics and books will burn…

My Review

I wanted to love Ink and Bone. I wanted to...seriously. But I just didn't end up liking this book. I didn't like the writing style, I didn't like anny of the characters nor did I care anything about them or what happened to them. There was also some content I didn't like either. Again, I wanted to love and enjoy this. But that just didn't happen.

13 Reasons Why Doesn't Have What You're Looking For

I'm sure every person on the planet at this point knows about the Netflix series, "13 Reasons Why". The show's main character Hannah Baker commits suicide and sends 13 tapes to the 13 people she blames for her taking her own life. The Netflix series was a smashing success and Netflix already has plans to bring it back for a second season.

Recently, JAMA Internal Medicine released a medical study on how the series is actually causing a rise in suicidal thoughts and tendencies. It shows that internet searches using the phrases, "how to commit suicide, "commit suicide", and "how to kill yourself" have risen an overall 19% in the 19 days following the shows release. Now call me crazy but isn't shows like these suppose to help kids dealing with suicidal thoughts and tendencies? In this article, HERE, examples are given by psychologists about their own young patients mentioning the program in their sessions. One doctor told about his 12 year old patient.

“She said to me, ‘I saw that show and it really convinced me that suicide was a normal thing to do,’” he said. “I’ve never heard that. In 30 years, I’ve never heard a child say this thing made me think suicide is normal. That really got my attention.”

The reason why this show is causing more psychological and emotional pain is because 13 Reasons Why doesn't give the audience a lasting and eternal answer for your problems. The only lasting and eternal answer is through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And if you want to watch a program laying out this answer for you please think about going to https://www.theexitmovie.com to watch EXIT: The Appeal of Suicide.

REVIEW: The Promise of Breeze Hill

About the Book

Natchez, MS; 1791
Anxious for his brothers to join him on the rugged frontier along the Mississippi River, Connor O'Shea has no choice but to indenture himself as a carpenter in exchange for their passage from Ireland. But when he's sold to Isabella Bartholomew of Breeze Hill Plantation, Connor fears he'll repeat past mistakes and vows not to be tempted by the lovely lady.

Despite her growing feelings for the handsome Irish carpenter, she seriously considers accepting her wealthy and influential neighbor's proposal of marriage.

Soon, though, Connor realizes someone is out to eliminate the Bartholomew family. Can he set aside his own feelings to keep Isabella safe?

My Review

I absolutely LOVED The Promise of Breeze Hill. Set in what is now known as Mississippi which at this time was controlled by the Spanish and filled with utter chaos and lawlessness. Isabella is left to run her family's plantation after her father is injured and her brother is suspiciously found dead along the Natchez Trace. And she fears they may lose everything they have. Enter Connor who is an Irish carpenter has been sold to Isabella's family. As Isabella and Connor begin falling for on another Isabella does consider accepting her wealthy neighbor's proposal just to save her family's livlihood. Isabella and Connor must also figure out who has it out for Isabella's family. The Promise of Breeze Hill is not just another historical novel, but a romance and mystery wrapped up into a satisfying adventure.

REVIEW: Freedom's Ring by Heidi Chiavaroli

About the Book

Boston, 2015
Two years after nearly losing her life in the Boston Marathon bombing, Annie David is still far from “Boston strong.” Instead she remains isolated and defeated―plagued by guilt over her niece, crippled in the blast, and by an antique ring alongside a hazy hero’s face. But when she learns the identity of her rescuer, will he be the hero she’s imagined? And can the long-past history of the woman behind the ring set her free from the guilt and fears of the present?

Boston, 1770
As a woman alone in a rebellious town, Liberty Caldwell finds herself in a dangerous predicament. When a British lieutenant, Alexander Smythe, comes to her rescue and offers her employment, Liberty accepts. As months go by, Alexander not only begins to share his love of poetry with her, but protects Liberty from the advances of a lecherous captain living in the officers’ house where she works.

Mounting tensions explode in the Boston Massacre, and Liberty’s world is shattered as her brother, with whom she has just reunited, is killed in the fray. Desperate and alone, she returns home, only to be assaulted by the captain. Afraid and furious toward redcoats, Liberty leaves the officers’ home, taking with her a ring that belonged to Alexander.

Two women, separated by centuries, must learn to face their fears. And when they feel they must be strong, they learn that sometimes true strength is found in surrender.

My Review

Freedom's Ring was a refreshing historical read. A multi-generational story of two women living in different periods of American history and their journeys toward the freedom they desire greatly. Both women must face fears and overcome obstacles to achieve their liberty. Freedom's Ring was wonderfully engaging, well researched and fleshed out novel that makes an impact.

For light and darkness cannot coexist. She needs answers before the Callings disappear altogether. Can El find a way to sever her connection to Ky and save the Reflections--and keep herself from falling for him in the process?

My Review

Unraveling is the sequel to Sar Ella's debut YA Fantasy, Unblemished, about a girl who's very power is in her insecurities. Unblemished was an almost perfect yet still a five star read. Unraveling continues the story and doesn't disappoint. It isn't very often when a sequel is almost just as good as it's predecessor, but Unraveling hits the mark.
