REVIEW: Of Stillness and Storm by Michele Phoenix

About the Book

“I felt torn between two worlds. Each with its own mystery. One more captivating than the other, but the other more real and breathing.”

It took Lauren and her husband ten years to achieve their dream—reaching primitive tribes in remote regions of Nepal. But while Sam treks into the Himalayas for weeks at a time, finding passion and purpose in his work among the needy, Lauren and Ryan stay behind, their daily reality more taxing than inspiring. For them, what started as a calling begins to feel like the family’s undoing.

At the peak of her isolation and disillusion, a friend from Lauren’s past enters her life again. But as her communication with Aidan intensifies, so does the tension of coping with the present while reengaging with the past. It’s thirteen-year-old Ryan who most keenly bears the brunt of her distraction.

Intimate and bold, Of Stillness and Storm weaves profound dilemmas into a tale of troubled love and honorable intentions gone awry.

My Review

3.5 stars

Of Stillness and Storm tells the story, the dark side, of missionary life. A mother who's struggling between two worlds, a teenaged boy who doesn't want any part of missionary life and who is quickly spiraling into depression, and the return of a man named Aiden. This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't a fantastic book either. I found myself enthralled in certain chapters and then found myself skimming pages. Of Stillness and Storm is a strong 3.5 star novel.

REVIEW: Pursuing Gold by Cynthia L. Simmons

About the Book

With his father dead and his business partner incapacitated, Peter Chandler inherits the leadership of a bank in economic crisis. With only a newly-minted college degree and little experience, Peter joins his partner's daughter, Mary Beth Roper, in a struggle to keep C&R Bank afloat while the Civil War rages around Chattanooga. Political pressure for unsecured loans of gold to the government stirs up trouble as tempers and prices rise. Their problems multiply when Mary Beth discovers counterfeit money with Peter's forged signature. Can they find the forger before the bank fails? The two friends must pursue gold on behalf of their business, as they learn to pursue their heavenly Father to find hope and peace.

My Review

I will start my review by talking about the cover. I was not attracted to this cover whatsoever, but I reluctantly looked past this cover because this synopsis sounded interesting. I have a lot of interest in Civil War history and I have ancestors who served on both sides of the Civil War. Unfortunately, I didn't like this book at all. I found the characters unlikable and flat. There was a plot hole I found frustrating and it was all around not a very good book. I was so looking forward to this story and it ended up being a dud for me personally.

REVIEW: The Occupied by Craig Parshall

About the Book

From New York Times bestselling author Craig Parshall comes a riveting story of supernatural suspense.

As a youth, Trevor Black unleashed spiritual forces he couldn't comprehend. Years later, Trevor is a high-flying criminal defense lawyer in New York City, with a six-figure Aston Martin and a trophy wife. But in an extraordinary turn of events, he receives a burdensome gift: the ability to perceive the invisible. And the dark forces he now sees are all gunning for him.

When one of Trevor's hometown friends is murdered, the MO is eerily similar to a shocking trail of murders that have already crossed the lawyer's path. So Trevor must return home to find the killer. . . and face not only his own personal demons, but supernatural ones as well.

My Review

The Occupied by Craig Parshall was my very first of his books and I enjoyed it very much. If you're a fan of Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness than this would be a book for you. It's a mix of mystery, suspense, warfare, and the supernatural. This is a novel that will satisfy all fans of these genres. Even the pickiest like myself.

Most Anticipated 2017 Releases: PART 1

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

It's finally that time of year. The time of twinkly lights, bringing trees inside the house, movies every night, sitting on Santa's lap, and eating until you pass out on the couch. It's also the time of year I put together a list of my most anticipated releases for the first half of 2017. There are a variety of different authors and genres and maybe you will find a few books to add to your TBR list.

JANUARY

By Your Side
by Kasie West
January 31, 2017

An irresistible story from Kasie West that explores the timeless question What do you do when you fall for the person you least expect?
When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.
Only he doesn’t come. No one does.
Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn at first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

FEBRUARY

The Lost Girlof Astor Street
by Stephanie Morrill
February 7, 2017

When her best friend vanishes without so much as a good-bye, eighteen-year-old Piper Sail takes on the role of amateur sleuth in an attempt to solve the mystery of Lydia’s disappearance. Given that Piper’s tendency has always been to butt heads with high-society’s expectations of her, it’s no surprise that she doesn’t give a second thought to searching for answers to Lydia’s abduction from their privileged neighborhood.
As Piper discovers that those answers might stem from the corruption strangling 1924 Chicago—and quite possibly lead back to the doors of her affluent neighborhood—she must decide how deep she’s willing to dig, how much she should reveal, and if she’s willing to risk her life of privilege for the sake of the truth.
Perfect for fans of Libba Bray and Anna Godbersen, Stephanie Morrill’s atmospheric jazz-age mystery will take readers from the glitzy homes of the elite to the dark underbelly of 1920s Chicago.

Recruits
by Thomas Locke
February 14, 2017

For more than a decade, twins Sean and Dillon Kirrell have felt pulled toward another world--a place they have sketched out in detail and posted on the walls of their bedroom. They are certain it is out there. Soon after their seventeenth birthday, they are approached by a clandestine scout. To him, Earth is just a distant and unmonitored outpost of human civilization. But he explains that Sean and Dillon share a unique gift--the ability to transfer instantly from place to place. Transitors who are also twins are especially rare, and so they are offered an opportunity to prove themselves as recruits to the human assembly. If they don't succeed within thirty days, their minds will be wiped. Either they make the grade as inter-planetary travelers--or this never happened.

From the infinite imagination of Thomas Locke comes this otherworldly new series that will challenge young readers' understanding of time, space, and human limitations.
