REVIEW: Dancing on the Head of a Pen by Robert Benson

Dancing on the Head of a Pen by Robert Benson

{About the Book}

In this masterful blend of the practical and the spiritual, Robert Benson invites you into the work and rewards of a writer’s life. More than a primer on effective writing, Dancing on the Head of a Pen is a winsome guide to the place in the heart where the life of the spirit meets the life of art.

Dancing on the Head of a Pen is a pure delight to read. Encouraging, honest, practical, and important. I needed this book.”
—Melody Carlson, author of more 200 books including Finding Alice

“With deceptive simplicity and an almost seductive easiness in his voice, Benson lays open before us the filigreed mystique of the writing life in all its beauty, its unmitigated angst, and its inescapable vocation.”
—Phyllis Tickle, author of numerous books including The Divine Hours

“Robert Benson’s Dancing on the Head of a Pen is a gem. It is wise, witty, and inspiring—a trifecta seldom achieved by a book on the writing life.”
—James Scott Bell, bestselling author of Plot & Structure

After some forty years and nearly twenty books, I have learned I do not know about a lot of things, but I do know how to write a book. Some of these things are habits stolen from other writers, writers far better than I am. Some are disciplines I stumbled upon to feed both the caliber of the writing and the work of being a writer. Some of them are practices I discovered on my own after years of dancing on the head of a pen.
Robert Benson

The Life of the Spirit Meets the Life of Art

A compelling combination of advice and inspiration, Dancing on the Head of a Pen will challenge and encourage writers, artists, musicians, painters—anyone drawn to a life of artistic expression.

Digging deeply into his own writing habits, failures, and successes, Robert Benson helps you choose the ideal audience for your work, commit to it, and overcome the hurdles that inevitably confront both aspiring artists and accomplished professionals.
Extending beyond the craft of writing, this gentle book moves into a rich discussion on the relationship between spirituality and art. Including wisdom from revered writers past and present, Dancing on the Head of a Pen is a beautiful mosaic of inspiration, practical help, and a glimpse into the disciplines that shape one writer’s life.

5 Stars!

What a great book about writing and the life and practice of a writer. Ben really know what he is talking about. It was such a delight to read. It was inspiring, honest, and not to mention pretty witty. All the tips Robert offers are actually practical. And the most important tip Robert gave was to READ!

If your a writer I definitely recommend this!

REVIEW: CRATER TRUEBLOOD AND THE LUNAR RESCUE COMPANY by Homer Hickam

CRATER TRUEBLOOD AND THE LUNAR RESCUE COMPANY by Homer Hickam

{About the Book}

A kidnapped lunar heiress. A deranged-science syndicate. An imminent asteroid impact. Crater Trueblood has more to rescue than just his ex-girlfriend . . . namely the entire human race.

Maria Medaris is the 21-year-old matriarch of the most powerful family on the moon. She is gorgeous, she is powerful, and she is high maintenance. But when Maria is kidnapped by purple-faced, gene-splicing scientists in league with her father, her only hope is the very man she once spurned: Crater Trueblood.

Much more than Maria is at stake: the planet Earth, majestically rising over the lunar horizon, is in the crosshairs of an asteroid engineered by Maria's abductors. If Crater can't stop it, then Earth faces a dinosaur-style collision. And humanity faces an extinction-level event.

Along with Crescent, his fiercely loyal, bioengineered she-warrior, Crater and the Lunar Rescue Company must come to Maria's rescue--before she joins forces with the brainiac lunatics who have taken her hostage . . . and who want to make her queen.

Can Maria finally look beyond her own selfish love of power? Can Crescent overcome her jealous attachment to Crater? Can Crater rescue his former fiancee and divert the apocalyptic asteroid in a single day?

The fate of two worlds hangs in the balance . . . and the clock is ticking.

Rating: 3 Stars!

I am normally a HUGH Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan, however this book was not for me. There was a lot of info dumps and the romance didn't do anything for me either. The characters were not likable in my opinion and I could not get invested in them and their goals.

The Bucket List Tag

I saw this tag at Hayden's blog, Story Girl. (Click the link to see her tag post.) I thought it looked super fun, so here is my Bucket List Tag.

I know it may be kind of silly, but I have a love for vintage typewriters.

What kind of geek would I be if I didn't want to attend Comic-con! And it's going on right now and I am so jealous.

Work/Volunteer for my local library would be so much fun, and something I hope to start doing this Fall.

You know actually finish and publish a novel you can be proud of. I'm working my way toward this at this very moment.

Fall in love & get married. What girl doesn't want this.

I want at least two kids, a boy & a girl. Maybe three. I even have some names already picked out.

Me & my mom have done this to an extent, but I would love to dig deeper.

I am an #Anglophile and I really want to visit England. & I happen to be part English too.

I've always had a fascination with the famous red phone booths.

Ireland, such a beautiful country. I'm also part Irish too.

Another beautiful place. And yes, I'm part Scottish.

Visit a castle, yes please. Especially Blair Castle, which is the ancestral home of the Clan Murray. (My ancestors.)

I have always wanted to visit Egypt. From a very young age I have been fascinated with Ancient Egypt and it's culture.

Meet Richard Armitage
If I met Richard, I could die happy!

This was a fun post to put together and if you have a bucket list and a blog, please feel free to make your own Bucket List post.

TOP TEN TUESDAY: TOP TEN CHARACTERS + A DESERTED ISLAND

TOP TEN TUESDAY

I haven't a TOP TEN TUESDAY in so long and this one sounded like fun, so here is Top Ten Characters you would want with you on a desert island.

1. Thorin Oakenshield

I just love this character, in the book and the films. He is so complex and while he makes really tough decisions, maybe ones you would not chose yourself, you empathize with him. Not to mention he is a total warrior, and you can always use protection, right?!

2. Guy of Gisborne from BBC's Robin Hood

Guy is quite good with a sword, so I think he could be the hunter/food gatherer.

3. John Thornton from BBC's North and South

Hmmm....I think there is a trend going on! lol When your overwhelmed about how you'll get off the island you need someone to talk to. John is definitely that guy.

I know this is supposed to be a TOP TEN, but I honestly couldn't come up with any more than these three.

REVIEW: Death Takes a Ride by Lorena McCourtney

 Death Takes a Ride by Lorena McCourtney

{About the Book}

Cate Kinkaid arrives at H&B Classic Auto Restorations to give a friend a ride. But, as usual, trouble finds Kate even there--this time in the form of one dead man, one wounded man, and what appears to be a pretty obvious case of self-defense. Owner Matt Halliday wants to hire her, but not for this case. Instead, Cate is charged with finding a man who owns a particular motorcycle Matt would like to buy. As her search progresses, she begins to suspect that the shooting in Matt's office may not have been as cut-and-dried as it appeared.

Bestselling and award-winning author Lorena McCourtney takes readers on another wild ride of mystery in this clever cozy mystery, part of her popular series The Cate Kinkaid Files.

{My Review}

First off, I hate the cover. For me, I think it is to childish. It looks more like a children's book than a mystery novel written for an older audience.  I don't like this cover one bit. Now on to the actual contents of this cover. This was just an okay mystery novel. I've read much more interesting and intriguing mystery novels before this one, Blood Bayou by Karen Young is a great example. Now that was a great mystery in my opinion. I did not care for the characters and just could not become invested in them. I found them utterly boring and uninteresting. Overall, this book was not my cup of tea. However, don't let my review hinder you from picking up this book, while I did not enjoy it, that doesn't mean you won't.

REVIEW: Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble

Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble

{About the Book}

"Complex characters and a tense plot make this a thrilling tale of romantic suspense. Fans of the other titles in the series will not be disappointed with this gripping installment, and the intricate and eerie story line will entice readers who enjoy books by Ted Dekker, Iris Johansen, and J.D. Robb." --"Library Journal "

In a secluded corner of Hope Beach, one woman must decipher a stranger's memories . . . before they cost her everything.

Elin Summerall was one of the lucky ones. Not only did she get a heart transplant, but the donor was a perfect fit. A miraculously perfect fit.

But when Elin begins having violent flashbacks--and vivid dreams of being strangled--she realizes that she has been the recipient of more than just a new heart . . . Elin is remembering her donor's murder.

Her strange affliction has attracted some unwanted attention: from the press, from the authorities . . . and from the killer himself. Now, living alone with her young daughter and aging mother, Elin is being stalked--by a man she's only met in her nightmares.

The police are dubious of her story, but one off-duty FBI agent is eager to help her: Agent Marc Everton, the father of Elin's daughter.

Of course, he doesn't know about that. Yet.

Now, in a remote cottage on Hope Island, Elin and Marc must probe the secrets buried in her borrowed heart. And there's no time to waste. One man is desperate to silence her--before she remembers too much.

{My Review}

5 Stars!

Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble was quite a fast-paced, suspenseful, quick read for me. The story centers around Elin Summerall, she survived a heart transplant, but someone wants her dead. The cops pushing her and her story off to the wayside, except for one FBI Agent, Marc Everton. Elin is also holding something back from Marc, the fact he is the father of her daughter. Together Elin and Marc have to find the villain before he finds Elin. Like I said earlier, it's a quick read and it's perfect for a read at the beach.

Review: Love Comes Home

Love Comes Home

{About the Book}

World War II is finally over and the people of Rosey Corner are busy welcoming the boys home. The Merritt sisters in particular are looking toward the future. Kate is eager to start a family and live out her dream of happily ever after with Jay. Evangeline wants a beautiful house and encourages Mike to pastor a big-town church. Victoria wants what can never be–a life with a man who will never come back. And little Lorena is growing up and wondering more and more about her birth family.
Through the heartfelt storytelling of bestselling author Ann Gabhart, readers join these endearing characters as they walk an uncertain road. Each sister must learn to hold her plans with a loose hand, trusting that God will guide and strengthen them as they share the joys and sorrows of life in their little corner of the world.

{My Review}

5 Stars!!

I absolutely adored Love Comes Home. It's set right after World War II in the 1940's, which I love because I am absolutely obsessed with that era. The story centers around Lorena, who is adopted, and her sisters are getting ready to settle down and have families, and while Lorena also wants that she also wonders about her birth family. The pace of this story was so perfect, as was the character development. I felt everything the characters felt and I became quite invested in them. Overall, this is the perfect historical fiction read for your Summer afternoon at the pool.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Persecuted: I Will Not Be Silent by Robin Parrish

 Persecuted: I Will Not Be Silent by Robin Parrish

{About the Book}

"The framers of our Constitution meant we were to have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion." --Reverend Billy Graham The Question Is Not If Attempts Will Be Made
to Limit Religious Freedoms, But When.
And When That Day Comes, Will You Stay Silent?
A storm is coming.
The most popular evangelist of his day, John Luther, simply wants to share the Gospel and enjoy a quiet life with his family. He never asked to be at the center of a political controversy, but an ill wind has been blowing through the halls of Congress, and supporters of a new religious-equality bill see Luther's endorsement as critical.
But when Luther refuses to lend his support, he unknowingly sets in motion an explosive plan bent on destroying his reputation and undermining everything for which he stands. His once-normal life is turned upside down as he becomes a fugitive left with only one dangerous option--putting everything he holds most dear at risk while he fights to expose the truth. It is a mission that brings him face-to-face with the coming storm of persecution that could threaten the very fabric of our nation's freedoms.

{My Review}

This is one of those quintessential political thrillers, almost non-stop action and was written beautifully. This story is about when the door is opened to legislation that would begin persecuting Christians. This is a very real and very relevant story for today and is a warning of where our country is heading if we don't start standing up. The main character was likable and I was definitely invested in the character. This read is something you men would really enjoy.

{Giveaway}

I have been given the opportunity to give away one copy of Persecuted by Robin Parrish. To enter please comment with your "Favorite president and why?" and with your email so I can contact you if you are the winner.

REVIEW: The Revealing by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Revealing by Suzanne Woods Fisher

{About the Book}

Naomi King, soft spoken, loyal, and easily overlooked, has a gift. She sees what others can't see. Intuition, she calls it. Others in Stoney Ridge don't know what to make of it and dismiss her hunches and inklings altogether.

When a young woman arrives at the Inn at Eagle Hill with a shocking secret about Tobe Schrock, Naomi fears the worst. She can't ignore the feeling that something sinister is at work-- something more than a threat to the tenuous love begun between her and Tobe.

As signs mount, they begin to point to Jake Hertzler, the elusive mastermind behind Schrock Investments' downfall. Soon, events spiral hopelessly out of control and Naomi must decide whether to listen to her head or her heart.

In this riveting conclusion to The Inn at Eagle Hill series, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher pulls out all the stops with a fast-paced tale of deception, revelation, and just the right dose of romance.

{My Review}

3 Stars!

The Revealing by Suzanne Woods Fisher is exactly what I thought it was going to be, a cutsey Amish tale. Maybe it's just me, but I really could not get into it much at all. The Revealing is the all too familiar Amish novel and I hope we soon get some Amish novels with some different twists.

{My Review}

Rating: 4.5 Stars!

I loved All For a Sister! Set in Hollywood during the Roaring Twenties, Celeste has everything she could ever dream of. The first thing that caught my eye was the cover. The cover is amazing and I love anything set in Hollywood during the Golden Age of the Eras. This novel kept my attention, but I gave it a 4.5 rating because I did not completely connect with Celeste.

Song of the Week

Song of the Week

This week the Song of the Week is: The Misty Mountain Song. Written by the amazing JRR Tolkien and finally was performed by the Dwarves in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. (2012)

In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, this is probably my favorite scene in whole film. Next to the beginning of the film when Bilbo is running and screaming, "I'm going on an adventure!". I was and still am thoroughly impressed by this scene and the vocals, especially Richard Armitage's voice. This song is beautifully haunting and Richard's voice just adds to it so immensely. As you can probably tell I am getting quite anxious for Part 3 to release this Winter!
